The building is a former coaching inn, "The Talbot", built in 1540, probably on the site of an earlier inn.
In 1540:
James V (father of Mary, Queen of Scots) had ruled Scotland for 27 years, though he was only 28 years old.
Henry VIII, King of England, was 49 years old, and had ruled England for 31 years. In that year he married (sequentially) Anne of Cleves, and Catherine Howard.

Francis I, King of France, was 46 years old, and had reigned for 25 years.

Thomas Tallis, English composer, was 35 years old.
Thomas Cranmer, first Protestant Archbishop of Canterbury, and author of the Book of Common Prayer was 51 years old.
Thomas Cromwell, chief planner behind Henry VIII's divorces and marriages, was executed for treason.
Martin Luther, church reformer, was 57 years old.
