John Dawson: Work

From 1989 to 2009 I was a Computer Officer, working for the University of Cambridge Computing Service, running a department called (for historical reasons) the Literary and Linguistic Computing Centre.

This was a service department which essentially dealt with all the problems faced by the humanities (i.e. non-science) faculties and departments (English, Law, History, Modern and Medieval Languages, Classics, Philosophy, Oriental Studies, Music, Criminology, and Divinity).

We also helped to administer the networked public terminals on the humanities site, and provided a certain amount of specialist software and hardware for handling foreign alphabets such as Greek, Hebrew, and Arabic; for text sorting; and for printing music.

I was a Computer Officer in the University Computing Service from 1989, but had run the LLCC (with a different title) since 1974.

I am an Honorary Member of the Association for Literary and Linguistic Computing (ALLC) (having been the Association's Secretary from 1977 to 1983 and a Committee Member for many years).

As a graduate of King's College, Cambridge, I am automatically a Senior Member of that college; I have also been elected a Senior Member of Wolfson College, Cambridge, and have been one of the Senior Member Observers on its Governing Body.

I retired on 9 October 2009, and although I shall keep my university email address and be able to read email sent to that address, it's better now to use my home email address: john@rabancourt.co.uk
