John Dawson's Walks

Most years from 1997 to 2005 I led at least one walk, usually in some obscure part of London. For various reasons there has been a long gap in the sequence.
But the next London walk is on Saturday 12 June 2010!

This will be the last one for a while, as we'll be in Berlin from July 2010 until June 2011, so come and give us a good send-off!

From Keats to Marx, Saturday 12 June 2010

(Click on the link for full details.) I shall provide some historical and geographical information, to make the walk more interesting.

Previous walks

In 1997 we did an evening walk, in July, from Greenwich to Woolwich, along the River Thames. This passed from the Georgian splendour of Greenwich to the decaying industrial areas of Woolwich, with interesting views of the Docklands developments. Twice we passed under the river in the foot tunnels. We had a picnic next to the Thames Barrier, and ended up at a pub in Canary Wharf.

We missed out 1998 because of moving house and decorating, but in 1999 we again walked along the Thames, this time during the day, from Wandsworth to Westminster (the walk was called "A Bridge Too Far", and as it was an extremely hot day, it felt like it!)

In 2000 we did two canal walks, both during the day on Saturdays. The first was from Paddington (Little Venice) to Limehouse, where the canal meets the Thames. The second went the other way, from Little Venice to Alperton, taking in the beautiful and fascinating Kensal Green Cemetery.

For a variety of reasons, very few people came on those two walks, so the first walk of 2001 combined the most interesting features of the two canal walks. The second walk departed from our usual waterways routes to concentrate on the heights (topographic and social) of north London.

The 2002 walk followed (approximately) the line of the M11 and M25 motorways. If that doesn't sound fascinating, you should have joined the 15 others who tried it! We had an excellent day in beautiful scenery.

The 2003 walk was in the wilder parts of south-east London.

Owing to a bad foot, there was no 2004 walk, but the 2005 walk was a stroll through London in the evening.
