Historic ships and boats.
This file lists over 700 historic or classic vessels: museum-ships and smaller craft, many of which form part of the collections of some of the maritime museums in the main list. Some entries on this page are linked to fuller details on other pages.
Please note: The National Historic Ships Committee (NHSC) set up the National Register of Historic Vessels. The Core Collection and the Designated Vessels lists of the NRHV can be found through: http://www.nhsc.org.uk/ . Some of these NRHV listed vessels are owned by museums, or are museum ships in their own right. The Core Collection and Designated Vessels which are included in the list below are marked CC or DV respectively. Many Core Collection and Designated Vessels are not usually open to the public, and therefore might not be listed below.
NMV: Not a museum vessel. In the list below, this abbreviation indicates a classic or historic vessel in private ownership, or owned by a preservation trust or society. It may be commercially operated for charter or tours. It may occasionally be accessible at historic or maritime events. It might sometimes be viewable by private appointment but is not to be regarded as a museum exhibit. There are more details for some of these non-museum vessels in the auxiliary file nmvs.htm, or click where there is a link below.
Naval and ex-Naval vessels: all vessels that have been commissioned as Royal Naval vessels are given the prefix HMS in the list below. In most cases this is only a courtesy title, since they have been decommissioned and are no longer part of the Royal Navy. The exceptions are HMS Caroline and HMS Victory. HMS Victory is still in commission as a flagship in Portsmouth, and is open to the public at defined times. HMS Caroline is still in commission at Belfast and is rarely open to the public.
The list below is primarily of named vessels. Most of these belong to one or other of the museums listed in the main alphabetical list. There are particularly large collections of small craft at the National Maritime Museum (Greenwich) and the National Maritime Museum Cornwall at Falmouth, The World of Boats at Eyemouth, the Merseyside Maritime Museum in Liverpool and the Boat Museum at Ellesmere Port. These collections also include many small craft without names, which therefore may not be in this list. Details of these can be obtained by contacting these museums, by post, telephone or looking on their web-sites. We are grateful to these museums for permission to reproduce the names of the vessels in their collections.
The National Maritime Museum Cornwall, at Falmouth, has over 60 historic small craft. This collection is divided between a more-or-less permanent display, called "Set Sail", a rotating display called "Flotilla" where some boats change annually, and boats that are in store and not accessible. Some boats are on loan to the museum. The entries below indicate if these boats are in store, or in the rotating "Flotilla" display - in which case they might be taken off display at short notice.
Many of the entries in this list were set up several years ago. It is hoped that they are still correct, as we try to amend entries when we know of changes. However, if anyone is aware of links that do not work, errors that need correcting, or new entries that ought to be included, we will be very grateful for any information. E-mails to:

Note on dimensions: some vessel dimensions are given in current British units of feet and inches (sometimes rounded to the nearest, sometimes expressed as a decimal fraction). There are 12 inches in one foot, which is equal to about 0.3048 metres. Some dimensions are metric.
