I was a Research Associate at the Digital Technology Group (DTG) headed by Andy Hopper. Previously, I obtained my PhD in Distributed Event-based Middleware for Sensor Networks, supervised by Jean Bacon (and advised by Jon Crowcroft) at the Systems Research Group (Opera). I am a member of St John's College, University of Cambridge; and also hold a B.A.I. Electronic & Computer Engineering from Trinity College, University of Dublin.

Research Activity

  • SESAME (SEnsing in Sport And Managed Exercise): SESAME is an EPSRC funded project (EP/D076943). It is a multidisciplinary group formed to investigate the use of wireless sensor-based systems with offline and real-time processing and feedback in enhancing the performance of elite athletes and young athletes who have been identified as having world class potential. For latest publication see
    • Taherian, S., Pias, M., Harle, R.,"Profiling Sprints using On-Body Sensors" in Proc of the Sixth IEEE International Workshop on Sensor Networks and Systems for Pervasive Computing (PerSeNS), Mannheim, Germany, March 2010.

  • CSK (Cambridge Sensor Kit) Energy: The CSK Energy project investigates the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to reduce energy demand and save carbon emissions across domestic (household) and corporate (office space) environments. For latest publication see
    • Taherian, S., Pias,  M., Coulouris, G. and Crowcroft, J., " Profiling Energy Use in Households and Office Spaces" in Proc of the 1st ACM SIGCOMM International Conference on Energy-efficient Computing and Networking (e-Energy), Passau, Germany, April, 2010.

  • Healthcare (Physical Activity Monitoring): This work is in collaboration with the MRC (Epidemiology Unit) at Cambridge. The objective here is to capture people’s physical activity, and hence infer information about their health, using wearable (on-body) sensor systems. For latest publication see
    • van Hees, V., Pias, M., Taherian, S., Brage, S., Ekelund, U., “A method to compare new and traditional accelerometry data in physical activity monitoring” in Proc of the 2nd IEEE International WoWMoM Workshop on Interdisciplinary Research on E-Health Services and Systems (IREHSS), Montreal, Canada, June, 2010 (to appear).

Consulting Services

Occasionally, I’m asked to provide consulting services for commercial and non-profit organizations. The first meeting is usually free, but beyond that I expect to charge for my time. Some additional low-cost or free consulting service is considered if the work is of personal interest or benefits my research projects directly.
