Thomas Godard
Réception en l'honneur de la Reine Victoria, dans le salon de famille au château d’Eu, Eugène Lami (1843)

"Si n'estoient messieurs les bestes, nous vivrions comme clercs." (Rabelais, Gargantua, XV)

Welcome to my academic website

I am a PhD student in the Linguistics Department at the University of Cambridge. I work on prescriptivism and ideology in language codification, under the supervision of Professor Wendy Bennett. My PhD research specifically investigates the influence of 17th-century French grammarians on the codification of English in the 18th century.

I previously graduated with an MPhil in British Literature and an MPhil in Linguistics with French as a Foreign Language from Université Paris-Diderot. My Masters research focused on second-language acquisition and recurring errors made by English-speaking advanced learners of French.

Since 2007, I have also been teaching French as a lector at the French Department and in various colleges. This website contains online material and audio-visual resources designed for Cambridge undergraduates.
